Mumbai hits you all at once — the noise, the sea, the sheer number of people with somewhere to be. Haritha's side of the family knows this part of the world, so I've done Day 1 in Mumbai enough times to have opinions. Here's the version I'd actually give a friend flying in, not the postcard checklist.
1. Gateway of India (go early)
Start at the Gateway before the sun turns brutal. Yes it's touristy, but standing there with the Taj Mahal Palace hotel behind you is a proper 'okay, I'm really in Mumbai' moment. Skip the pushy boat touts unless you genuinely want the Elephanta Caves trip.
2. Marine Drive & 3. Colaba Causeway
Walk or grab a cab to Marine Drive and just sit on the sea wall for a while — locals call the evening lights the Queen's Necklace, and it's the calmest this city ever gets. Then hit Colaba Causeway for street shopping. Haggle; it's expected, not rude.
4. CST station & 5. Bandra by sunset
Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus is a working train station that looks like a cathedral — worth ten minutes just to stare. End the day out in Bandra: Bandstand, the Sea Link view, cafes that stay open late. One honest warning — Mumbai traffic is a genuine trip-killer, so cluster the south-Mumbai stops together and save Bandra for the evening. If a spot's shut by the time you go, tell me and I'll update this.
