I didn't expect a big American city to be this easy with kids in tow, but we keep coming back to the same loop whenever cousins show up with their little ones. None of it needs booking three weeks out, which is the whole point for people like us who plan trips at the last minute.
Start at the Bean (yes, obviously)
Millennium Park is free and right downtown, and Cloud Gate — 'the Bean' — turns every kid into a giggling mess at their own reflection. In summer the Crown Fountain spits water out of giant faces onto a splash pad, so bring a change of clothes because they will get soaked. Go early, before the tour groups roll in.
Navy Pier — a tourist trap I actually like
I usually dodge tourist traps, but Navy Pier earns it with kids. The Centennial Wheel has enclosed gondolas (a relief with a nervous five-year-old), the Children's Museum is properly hands-on, and there are short boat rides onto the lake. Time it for a summer evening and you might catch the free fireworks.
A few things I wish someone had told me
Pack layers even in July — the lake breeze is no joke. The CTA 'L' train is a ride in itself as far as little kids are concerned, so lean into it. And when everyone melts down, Ohio Street Beach is free and ten minutes from downtown. If a spot here has changed by the time you go, drop it in the comments and I'll fix the post.
